Buying guide

Bulk Textbook Buying Guide

Buying textbooks for a class, a department or a whole program is different from buying one copy. This guide walks through how many copies to order, how to plan the budget and approvals, when to order, and what to check when the books arrive.

Step by step

1. Confirm exactly which books you need
Get the ISBN-13 and edition for every title from the course syllabus or adoption list. Editions that look alike can differ in content and page numbers, so match the edition your instructor specifies.
2. Work out the quantity
Start from final enrollment and the number of sections. Add a few spare copies for late enrollments and damaged books, and one or two reserve copies if your library keeps course materials.
3. Compare the real cost
Look at the price per copy at your quantity, not just the single-copy price. Many titles step down in price at higher quantities. Add shipping and any tax to get the total, and check with your finance office whether your institution is tax-exempt.
4. Get approvals and a purchase order if required
Many schools and colleges need a requisition and approval before ordering, and a purchase order for larger orders. Ask your purchasing office what they need so the order is not delayed. See our Purchase Orders & Tax-Exempt Buying guide.
5. Order early
Plan for dispatch, delivery and your own internal approvals. Global Academic Supply usually dispatches within 1–2 business days and delivers in 4–14 business days after dispatch (see delivery timelines). Very large orders may need 1–2 extra days.
6. Check the delivery
Count the cartons, check the ISBNs and quantities against your order, and look at the condition of the books. Report any problem promptly. Our Returns page explains the process.

Do I need a purchase order to buy textbooks in bulk? +
It depends on your school or institution. Many require a purchase order and an approval step for larger orders, so check with your finance or purchasing office before you order. Purchase order details for Global Academic Supply are in our Purchase Orders & Tax-Exempt Buying guide.
How early should I order textbooks for the start of term? +

Use the ISBN-13 from your course syllabus or adoption list. It is also printed on the back cover and the copyright page of the book. Always match the edition your instructor specifies.
